Dr James Laban

Neurosurgeon & Spine Surgeon

Dr James Laban is an experienced and highly respected dual-certified consultant neurosurgeon and spine surgeon practising in Sydney. Dr Laban specialises in state-of-the-art spine, brain and peripheral nerve surgery, using minimally invasive techniques, robotics and computer-guidance.

As Director of Neurosurgery at St George’s University Hospital in London, one of the world’s largest teaching hospitals and a neurosurgical centre of excellence, Dr Laban treated patients with the most complex neurosurgical conditions from all around the world. He has been awarded multiple scholarships, sat as faculty board member of numerous neurosurgical committees and completed fellowships at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney in both cranial and spinal neurosurgery.

Dr Laban now runs a large private practice in Sydney. He is an expert in specialist spinal disorders, cranial neurosurgery and peripheral nerve surgery. His multidisciplinary team has extensive experience and together they provide world-class patient-centred care. He believes deeply in listening to patient’s concerns and delivering comprehensive and personalised treatment programs to achieve the best possible health outcome.

BACKGROUND

Whilst studying medicine at the world-leading Imperial College London, Dr Laban undertook
a further research degree in neuroscience. He received the prestigious national Wolfson
Scholarship and was awarded a Bachelor of Science Honours, Bachelor of Medicine and
Bachelor of Surgery.

Dr Laban was chosen for postgraduate studies in neurosurgery at London’s top hospitals,
including the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, King’s College Hospital and
St George’s University Hospital. During this time, he achieved the highest marks in both the
UK and European written examinations.

Following qualification as a specialist neurosurgeon, Dr Laban was awarded the HCA
International Foundation and Codman Neurosurgical Scholarships. He furthered his skills and
knowledge at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, undertaking two Fellowships to become
an expert in the fields of cranial and spinal neurosurgery. Dr Laban subsequently ran a large
private practice which also specialised in peripheral nerve surgery.

As Director of Neurosurgery at St George’s University Hospital in London, one of the world’s
largest teaching hospitals and a neurosurgical centre of excellence, Dr Laban treated patients
with the most complex neurosurgical conditions from all around the world. He was
educational and clinical governance lead and faculty board member of the Health Education
England Neurosurgery Training Committee and the Neurosurgical Specialist Advisory Group.
In 2017, in recognition of his international work, he was appointed Honorary Professor of
Neurosurgery at Cangzhou People’s Hospital, Hebei, China. Prior to returning to Sydney in
2018, Dr Laban’s busy private practice was based in the elite medical centres of Harley Street,
The London Clinic and The Lister and Cromwell hospitals where he provided expert care and
treatment to a large notable international patient base.

Dr Laban has also been honoured with Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of
Surgeons and Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons of England. He is a member of the
Neurosurgical Society of Australasia, the Society of British Neurological Surgeons and the
Cooperative Trials Group for Neuro-Oncology. He has worked as a reviewer for international
journals and presented and published nationally and internationally.

In 2005, Dr Laban became one of first Australians to have reached the Magnetic North Pole
on foot. He is a qualified ski and tennis instructor and enjoys surfing and logic.

CONDITIONS AND PROCEDURES

Spine Surgery

Dr Laban is an expert in back pain, sciatica, neck and arm pain, lumbar, thoracic and cervical
disc degeneration and spinal tumours including spinal metastatic disease. He has a vast
repertoire of spinal surgical skills (including minimally invasive surgery, computer-guided
surgery, anterior / posterior / 360-degree fusion, disc surgery and robotics). After qualifying
as a specialist neurosurgeon, Dr Laban was awarded and undertook the Royal North Shore
specialist neurosurgical spine fellowship. At St George’s Hospital, London, he developed one
of the largest spinal services in the UK. Dr Laban is interested in spinal pathophysiology,
preventative medicine and non-invasive therapies. He combines his expert knowledge of
these non-surgical and surgical therapies to provide tailor-made individualised treatment.

Brain Surgery

Dr Laban is a specialist cranial and neuro-oncological surgeon with expertise in treatment of
benign and malignant brain tumours, neurovascular compression syndromes (including
trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm), cavernomas, Chiari malformation and
hydrocephalus. He uses computerised image guidance, intra-operative electrophysiological
monitoring, fluorescence and awake surgery to maximize tumour resection, improve patient
safety and obtain the best long-term outcomes. He works closely with other physicians who
provide non-surgical therapies, including anti-epileptic medication, neoadjuvant and
adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and radiosurgery treatment options.
He offers guidance on the various treatment options to deliver excellence in patient-centred
neurosurgical care.

Peripheral Nerve Surgery

Dr Laban has a specialist interest in peripheral nerve surgery including peripheral nerve
decompression and tumour surgery. His expertise includes genetic conditions such as
neurocutaneous syndromes including neurofibromatosis 1 & 2 and schwannomatosis. He
works closely with orthopaedic and plastic surgeons as well as neurologists and clinical
geneticists to deliver personalised and comprehensive care. Dr Laban uses his expert
knowledge to provide tailor-made individualised treatment and deliver excellence in patient-centred
care.
